Way back when I was in college I had a set of nonstick cookware handed down to me from one of my aunts who was upgrading. I’ve used that set of cookware for all of my cooking, and now the non-stick coating is peeling away. I’m pregnant with my first child, and I’ve decided to finally spring for a new set of pans. My small little frying pan just doesn’t cut it cooking for my husband, me, and my baby. I have to find some new pans.
I started reading cookware reviews online and came across all of the info about non-stick pans containing chemicals that when overheated can cause pet birds to die and flu-like symptoms in humans. Being a rather forgetful chef, I often overheat my pans while cooking anything from eggs to popcorn. I’m frequently spotted carrying flaming pans and placing them outside to stop the shrill bleating of the smoke alarm. So, non-stick pans should probably never have been in my cabinet at all, and they certainly shouldn’t be in my pregnant, paranoid self’s cabinet. I decided pretty early on that stainless steel was the way to go for my family. I don’t have to worry that overheating will release harmful chemicals that might hurt me or my baby. I don’t have to worry about using the wrong utensil and ruining the non-stick finish.

What’s 18/10 Stainless Steel Anyway?
18/10 refers to the grade of stainless steel. 18 refers to the percentage of chromium present in the stainless steel. 10 refers to the percentage of nickel. Chromium binds to oxygen on the surface of the pan, and nickel keeps stainless steel from corroding, so they stay nice and shiny and don’t start crumbling to bits. This is Important for long-lasting pans!
Why is Tri-Ply important?
Apparently stainless steel isn’t even a little bit good at conducting heat. Pans made out of stainless steel alone are all kinds of crazy about getting hot spots, and not heating foods evenly. I’m not the best cook on a good day, so I need all the help I can get. A tri-ply pan has a layer of aluminum or copper sandwiched between layers of stainless steel. Sometimes, the bottom of the stainless steel pans are made of copper, the middle layer is aluminum, and the surface of the pan is stainless steel. These are the most expensive kind of pans out there.

Cons of Tramontina Stainless Cookware
Having decided to buy the Tramontina brand, I needed to do some counter research to determine what sorts of things might disappoint me after purchase.
The handles are Metal
I’ve been using plastic handled non-stick cookware forever, and it’s going to be a rather steep learning curve for me to remember that these pots and pans have metal handles and will burn me if I don’t use a potholder. I also count this as a Pro, however, because I can slip the entire pan into the oven after cooking to keep it warm without having to worry about melting plastic. Win!
Cooking Eggs Might Be a Problem
Some of the reviews indicated that it’s almost impossible to cook eggs without them sticking to the pan. Honestly, I have this problem with non-stick cookware already. After reading several cooking websites and reviews however, I’ve determined I’ve been cooking my eggs at a temperature that actually causes them to stick to the pan. Basically, I’ve been super heating my eggs. There’s a way to season my stainless steel pans with coconut oil to create a non-stick surface, and by only cooking eggs on low-medium heat, I should be able to keep a clean pan. I’m looking forward to trying these tips and tricks.
Stainless Can Become StainedWell, not stained per say, but maybe not so pretty. Some reviews stated that these pans take a little more work to keep shiny. I expect my pans to be more work horses than show ponies, so I don’t really expect them to look fantastic all of the time. That being said, there’s a product that many reviewers suggest using called the Bar Keepers friend that I already use to clean the front of my refrigerator and dishwasher, and it works on stainless steel pots as well, keeping them looking brand new.

After having done all of this research I’m ready to take action and get a great set of cookware. I know more about cookware than I ever thought I would, and I feel like I’m getting a fantastic bargain for the quality offered by this company. The tramontina cookware reviews on all sites are overwhelmingly positive, and not only for the stainless steel cookware. They also make other products that are very well reviewed including flatware and non-stick pots and pans.

I seasoned these stainless steel pans with coconut oil and now they perform just as well as my brother-in-laws non-stick set and they look better! You just have to remember not to wash them with soap and the non-stick surface lasts forever.
Tramontina 5 Qt. Deep Saute Pan

I was looking for a pan to fry catfish in and this one fits the bill! The depth is perfect to reduce splashing grease. The lid fits tightly and the pan has a great balance to it, which keeps it from tipping on the gas stove. I’ve also used this pan to boil rice, as it really is a large pan that can hold a lot. Good quality for a great price 🙂

I’ve been put on a low-fat, low sodium diet. I purchased this multi-cooker in order to steam vegetables to avoid frying in oil and to help me stick to my diet. The basket keeps me from having to heave a giant pot of boiling hot water, and I can cook a lot of vegetables at once, which is good, because I eat a lot. I also like to eat a lot of pasta, so I can use the same boiling water twice. After cooking the pasta, I empty the basket and place my vegetables inside. I add two tablespoons of low-fat cheese and some cracked red pepper and I don’t even feel like I’m eating healthy. This pot is great!

I absolutely love the retro coloring of this ceramic pan, and it’s healthier for me than those Teflon coated ones. I would give this five stars, but that would be perfect, and perfect is a quality reserved for Our Lord and Saviour. So I’m only giving it four stars, but it’s fabulous!
